This was back in 2002 but I just found out about it today.
The companies that lied about having ties to slavery, their contracts with the city were cancelled and Alderman Tillman found black companies to take over their contracts. They have been creating black millionaires.
Chicago makes history as 1st city to pass Slavery-Era Disclosure Ordinance - National Report

The Chicago City Council Finance and Human Relations committees recently passed an ordinance that requires any companies doing business with the city to give an account on whether or not they profited from slaves--or lose their contracts.
"We want to know what was your role in slavery, what did you do, was your company built off the backs of slaves," states Alderman Dorothy Tillman, who proposed the ordinance and is recognized as a crusader for slave reparations. "If they answer wrong, they can no longer do business with the city."
The intention of the Slavery Era Disclosure Ordinance--which requires record searches of banks, agricultural industries, railroads, textile manufactures and others--is not to bar companies with past slavery ties from getting contracts, but to get them to divulge information for a possible reparations lawsuit in the future.
The council also passed a resolution urging the Illinois House and Senate to pass a similar legislation.
"I fully support these two measures, and I congratulate the council for passing them," said Mayor Richard M. Daley, who added that the measure had historic significance. "We are the first city in the country to pass this ordinance ... It will not prevent companies from doing business with the city, but it will shed a light on slavery."
Last year, California required all insurance companies licensed in and doing business in the state to report information on slaveholder policies. Seven companies said they were able to locate and report such information.
